As crime trends continue to evolve, one of the simplest yet most effective ways residents can protect themselves and their families is by consistently arming their alarm systems.
“Too often, incidents occur where alarm systems were installed but not activated at the time of a burglary, intrusion, or emergency. An alarm system can only assist if it is armed and monitored correctly.”
“Perimeter security is the first layer of defence – and this includes your alarm system,” says Charnel Hattingh. “The entire perimeter of the property should be checked regularly for weaknesses.”
Fidelity ADT encourages all residents to follow these important safety tips:
- Arm your alarm even when you are at home
- Activate your alarm whenever you leave your home, even for short periods
- Test your alarm regularly to ensure it is functioning properly
- Teach your children and domestic workers how to use the alarm system
- Ensure all doors are locked and windows are secured before leaving home
- Keep your perimeter secure at all times
- Activate outdoor detection systems
- Lock away all garden, leisure, and other equipment when not in use
- Remain extra vigilant when leaving or arriving home. If you notice anything suspicious, do not enter your driveway
- Never allow strangers onto your property, regardless of their reason for visiting. Ensure domestic staff follow the same rule
- Carry a remote panic button at all times while at home and equip domestic staff with panic devices as well.
.
Your alarm system acts as an early warning tool, helping to alert you, your security provider, and emergency responders to suspicious activity or intrusions as quickly as possible.
In an emergency – press your panic button
“We have also seen cases where customers attempt to call our control room during emergencies instead of pressing their panic buttons,” says Hattingh.
During a medical emergency, home invasion, suspicious activity, or any situation where immediate assistance is required, pressing your panic button is the fastest and safest option.
Why panic buttons are important:
- Sends an immediate signal to the control room
- Ensures faster dispatch of Armed Response Officers
- Eliminates time lost explaining the situation over the phone
- Allows help to be sent even if you are unable to speak
- Reduces delays during high-stress situations.
.
Seconds matter during an emergency. Your panic button is specifically designed to get help to you as quickly as possible.
“Security is a shared responsibility. By making alarm activation part of your daily routine and using your panic button correctly, you significantly improve your safety and response readiness,” concludes Hattingh.
