Stay alert, stay safe: Shopping mall safety tips ahead of the Festive Season

As the festive season approaches, shopping centres and malls become busier — attracting not only bargain-hunters but also opportunistic criminals. Personal safety must remain a top priority as criminals often rely on distraction to target their victims.

Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group, urges the public to remain cautious and vigilant while shopping and when traveling to and from busy shopping centres.

“With just under four months to go until the festive season, many shoppers will make their way to malls. Unfortunately, criminal elements may also be present in these busy spaces. Your personal safety should be a key priority no matter where you go,” says Hattingh.

Smart shopping safety tips:

  • Travel light: Only carry essential items in your handbag or pockets. Leave unnecessary bank/store cards and large amounts of cash at home
  • Stay in control of your belongings: Never leave your handbag, purse, or wallet in a shopping trolley — not even for a moment
  • Don’t draw cash alone: If withdrawing a large amount, take someone with you to keep watch at the ATM and on the journey home
  • Be alert in parking areas: Keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles or individuals as you leave the centre
  • Suspect you’re being followed? Drive directly to your nearest police station or a secure location like a guard house
  • Follow hijacking prevention tips: Wait in the road for your gate to open before driving in, and ensure it closes fully before exiting your vehicle
  • Be prepared: Have your keys ready before you exit the mall so you can get into your vehicle quickly and safely
  • Avoid late-night shopping: Criminals often take advantage of quieter, less secure periods.

Remote jamming awareness:

Car remote jamming is still a growing concern. When parking your car:

  1. Physically check doors – Always pull on the handle to confirm they’re locked
  2. Stay alert – Watch for loiterers or unusual activity in parking areas
  3. Park wisely – Choose well-lit, busy areas with a visible security presence
  4. Be discreet – When accessing your boot, be aware of who’s around you
  5. Hide your valuables – Never leave laptops, handbags, or electronics in plain sight
  6. Choose security over convenience – Park near security officers or car guards when possible.
  7. Install tracking – A GPS tracker like Fidelity SecureDrive offers extra peace of mind.

Stay aware. Stay protected.

Being observant can make a major difference. Criminals target distracted individuals — whether you’re waiting in line or momentarily turning your back on a trolley. Something as small as a wallet or phone left exposed can become an easy target.

It’s also essential to educate your children. Teach them how to identify suspicious behaviour or people and remind them to stay close when in public spaces.

“It boils down to vigilance and awareness,” adds Hattingh. “Remain on guard at all times, be aware of your surroundings, and always prioritise the safety of your children and valuables.”
