Fidelity Services Group urges heightened vigilance this June: Practical safety tips for families during school holidays

As families prepare for the upcoming June school holidays, Fidelity Services Group is encouraging parents and caregivers to prioritise child safety when visiting public spaces such as shopping malls, parks, cinemas, restaurants, and entertainment venues, where increased foot traffic often coincides with heightened security risks.

The winter holiday period traditionally sees a rise in family outings to shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants, and recreational spaces. While these environments provide opportunities for families to relax and reconnect, they also present unique safety challenges due to multiple access points, large crowds, and increased levels of distraction.

This concern is especially relevant in the current South African context. Recent national crime statistics for 2024/25 indicate that children continue to be affected daily by incidents involving assault and attempted harm, with cases reported across the country in both private and public settings. These realities highlight the importance of increased vigilance.

At the same time, kidnapping trends in South Africa remain a significant concern. South African Police Service (SAPS) data shows that reported kidnapping cases have increased substantially over the past decade. While many incidents are linked to opportunistic crimes rather than targeted abductions, children, particularly those between the ages of 5 and 15, remain especially vulnerable in busy public environments where supervision may be reduced.

These realities emphasise the importance of viewing safety as part of the planning process before leaving home, rather than as a reactive measure once families are already out in public spaces.

“School holidays should be a time for families to relax and create positive memories together, but it is essential that safety remains a priority,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group.

“From a guarding perspective, we understand how quickly situations can escalate in busy public environments. By taking a few simple precautions and remaining aware of their surroundings, parents can significantly reduce potential risks.”

Managing risk in high-traffic environments

Fidelity Services Group notes that one of the primary challenges during peak holiday periods is the combination of crowd density and environmental complexity. Shopping centres and entertainment hubs often feature multiple entrances and exits, large open areas, and constant movement, making it easier for children to become separated from caregivers without immediate notice.

Children are naturally curious and eager to explore unfamiliar surroundings during outings, which can increase risk if clear boundaries and expectations are not established beforehand. Security teams frequently encounter incidents where children wander away during brief moments of distraction rather than as a result of deliberate negligence.

“Our guarding teams regularly respond to situations where children have simply wandered a short distance away from their caregivers,” explains Hattingh. “In most cases, these situations are resolved quickly, but they serve as an important reminder of how vital it is to remain attentive, particularly in crowded environments.”

Practical steps to enhance child safety

To help reduce risks during the holiday period, Fidelity Services Group recommends the following practical safety measures for parents and caregivers:

  • Stay close and attentive: Always keep younger children within sight and avoid allowing them to move around public spaces alone
  • Agree on a meeting point: Identify a central, easily recognisable location and ensure children know what to do if they become separated
  • Encourage awareness, not fear: Teach children to remain aware of their surroundings and to seek assistance from security personnel if needed
  • Use identification or tracking tools: Ensure children carry essential contact details. Younger children may benefit from ID bands or wearable tracking devices
  • Plan outings during quieter periods: Visiting public spaces during off-peak hours can reduce exposure to crowded environments
  • Limit distractions: Caregivers should remain present and minimise distractions such as excessive mobile phone use while supervising children
  • Choose secure environments: Opt for venues with visible guarding presence and established security measures.

A shared responsibility for safer spaces

Effective child safety requires collaboration between families, venue operators, and security providers. Fidelity Services Group’s Guarding division works closely with shopping centres, commercial properties, and public facilities across South Africa to help create safer environments through trained personnel, visible patrols, and rapid-response protocols.

“As a security provider operating across a wide range of public locations, we see first-hand how awareness and preparedness can help prevent incidents,” adds Hattingh.

“Safety is not only about reacting to situations, but also about creating a culture of awareness where risks are identified early and managed effectively.”

Fidelity Services Group also encourages parents and caregivers to familiarise themselves with on-site security points, help desks, and emergency procedures at the venues they visit, and to report any unusual or suspicious behaviour to on-site security personnel immediately.

With the right level of awareness, preparation, and support from security professionals, families can enjoy a safer and more memorable school holiday period.
