Easy home security fixes that make a big difference

Keeping your home safe doesn’t have to be complicated. Fidelity ADT is sharing a few simple and practical security fixes that homeowners can put into action immediately to help protect their families and properties.

“Small changes can go a long way when it comes to home security,” says Charnel Hattingh, Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity ADT. “Often, it’s the simple fixes that make homes less attractive to criminals and give families greater peace of mind.”

Simple security tips for every home:

Improve outdoor lighting
Well-lit entrances, driveways, and pathways act as a strong deterrent. Motion-sensor lights are especially effective, as they immediately draw attention to movement on your property.

Secure doors and windows
Install quality locks on all gates, reinforced doors, and burglar bars where necessary. Sliding doors should have anti-lift brackets and secure locking systems to prevent forced access. Always check that doors and windows are properly closed and locked before going to bed or leaving the house.

Trim overgrown shrubs and trees
Keep plants trimmed near windows, doors, and perimeter walls to eliminate hiding spots and improve visibility. Trees that provide easy access over walls or fences should be cut back. Ensure bushes do not obstruct outdoor passive alarm sensors. Avoid leaving items such as ladders, tools, or garden equipment outside, as these can be used to gain access to your home.

Update your security company and test your system
Your armed response provider should always have your current contact details to avoid delays in an emergency. Ensure they have updated cell phone numbers for everyone in your household. If you have recently adopted a dog, notify your security provider so responding officers are aware. Regularly test your alarm system — especially battery backups — to confirm signals are received correctly.

Use smart security solutions
CCTV cameras, outdoor beams, and alarm sensors allow homeowners to monitor activity remotely and respond quickly to potential threats.

Create the illusion that someone is home
Use timers for lights when you’re away and ask a neighbour or friend to collect your mail. Visible signs of an empty home can attract criminals.

Get to know your neighbours
Strong community relationships are a powerful crime deterrent. When neighbours look out for one another, suspicious activity is more likely to be spotted and reported quickly. Often, a neighbour is also the first to respond when something goes wrong.

Think like a criminal
Stand outside your gate and assess how easy it would be to access your property. Are there open windows, broken locks, or unsecured entry points? Check the door between your garage and main residence to ensure it locks properly and is used consistently. Start at the perimeter and work inward to identify vulnerabilities that need attention.

Talk to your loved ones
Personal safety should be an ongoing conversation. Make sure everyone in the household understands basic safety habits and knows how to respond in an emergency. Children, especially, should know how to call for help or use a panic alarm if needed.

“Security works best when we all play a part,” adds Hattingh. “By making a few simple changes, we can create safer homes and stronger communities.”
