Situational awareness: The human skill that saves lives at high-risk sites

Fidelity Services Group’s Guarding division highlights why well-trained security officers remain the cornerstone of effective site protection.

At industrial estates, construction sites, logistics hubs and other high-risk environments across South Africa, the difference between a near miss and a tragedy often comes down to one critical factor: situational awareness.

As South Africa’s largest integrated risk and security solutions provider, Fidelity Services Group is highlighting the critical role this human skill plays in protecting lives, safeguarding assets and ensuring business continuity.

Situational awareness – the ability to observe an environment, recognise potential threats and act before an incident escalates – is at the heart of effective guarding. While technologies such as CCTV, drones, thermal cameras and access control systems provide valuable intelligence, it is highly trained security officers who interpret these warning signs, assess risk and respond in real time.

“Cameras and sensors provide visibility, but it is the human ability to recognise unusual behaviour, assess risk and respond appropriately that ultimately saves lives,” says Wahl Bartmann.

“A security officer who understands the environment, recognises behavioural patterns and knows the normal rhythm of a site provides a layer of protection that technology alone cannot replace.”

High-risk sites such as mines, warehouses, fuel depots, manufacturing facilities and construction sites present unique security challenges. Valuable assets, multiple access points and constant movement create opportunities for criminals. A vehicle lingering near a perimeter, an unfamiliar individual in a restricted area or a subtle change in routine can all indicate potential theft, trespassing, sabotage or other safety risks.

“Our officers are trained to observe proactively and intervene before a situation escalates,” Bartmann explains. “Situational awareness is not about waiting for an alarm to sound; it is about preventing the alarm from ever needing to sound. That proactive approach protects employees, contractors, critical infrastructure and surrounding communities.”

Effective guarding extends well beyond preventing theft and vandalism. A secure environment supports operational continuity, employee wellbeing, regulatory compliance and business resilience, while helping organisations avoid costly disruptions, safety incidents and reputational damage.

Fidelity Services Group’s Guarding division combines rigorous recruitment, ongoing training and a deep understanding of each customer’s operating environment to deliver integrated, risk-based security solutions. Officers receive continuous training in observation, communication, conflict management and decision-making under pressure.

“We invest heavily in developing our people because they are our greatest asset and our customers’ first line of defence,” says Bartmann. “Every officer we deploy carries the responsibility of protecting lives, preserving business continuity and preventing incidents before they occur.”

Bartmann concludes: “When we protect a high-risk site, we are safeguarding far more than a perimeter fence. We are protecting the people who return home to their families, the businesses that keep our economy moving and the communities that depend on them.”

As criminal tactics evolve and operating environments become increasingly complex, Fidelity Services Group remains committed to combining advanced security technology with the judgement, vigilance and professionalism of highly trained security officers – ensuring that situational awareness continues to save lives.
