This Valentine’s Day, Security is our love language

Valentine’s Day is all about love, laughter and creating special memories – whether you’re planning a romantic night out, a cosy dinner at home, or a surprise getaway. This Valentine’s Day Fidelity ADT encourages South Africans to celebrate love while keeping safety top of mind.

“Valentine’s Day often means busy restaurants, packed shopping centres and late-night travel,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity ADT. “A little awareness goes a long way in making sure the only thing you lose this Valentine’s Day is your heart.”

Whether you are you are staying in or going out, assessing your property and doing a thorough check to rule out any vulnerable areas around your property should also be on the to-do list.

“We suggest taking a walk around the property to look for anything that could help an intruder access and exit the property easily. Are there low-hanging tree branches that can be used to climb over a fence or wall? Inspect gates, locks and doors and make sure they are in good condition.”

“If you have an electric fence, make sure your test it along with your alarm system regularly to ensure that it is in proper working condition when you need it the most. Test your outside beams at least once a month out of peak times. Make sure you keep your curtains and blinds drawn to make it difficult to see in from the outside. Never leave valuables or keys anywhere that they can be seen or reached from a window.”

If you are heading out, Hattingh provides a few safety tips to help couples, friends and families enjoy a safe and stress-free celebration:

  • Plan your routes. Whether you’re heading out for dinner or a weekend escape, plan your route in advance and avoid poorly lit or unfamiliar areas
  • Be discreet with valuables. Expensive jewellery can attract unwanted attention. Keep valuables out of sight where possible
  • Stay alert in busy places. Restaurants and malls can be crowded – keep personal belongings close and be aware of your surroundings
  • Lock up before you head out. Double-check that doors, windows and gates are secured before leaving home. Remember to arm your alarm and outside beams for added protection
  • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Your intuition is often your best form of protection.

For those choosing a quiet night in Hattingh reminds residents to ensure alarm systems are activated and outdoor lighting is switched on, adding an extra layer of peace of mind.

If there is any reason to believe that there is an intruder on the property, Hattingh’s advice is to never go outside to investigate. “Make sure that everyone in the household knows that they must immediately call the police or your security company. Try to remain on the line with them until officers arrive, and only venture outside once they indicate that it is safe to do so.”

“At the end of the day, Valentine’s Day should be about connection, not concern,” adds Hattingh. “With a few smart safety habits, everyone can focus on what really matters – celebrating love.”
