As the warmer months approach, many South Africans are preparing to enjoy outdoor gatherings with family and friends. Whether hosting at home, at a restaurant, or at a private venue, it’s essential not to overlook security.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group, warns that criminals are becoming increasingly brazen. Events where people gather to relax and celebrate are often viewed as soft targets.
“Armed robbers frequently target diners as they leave restaurants. In many cases, criminals lie in wait in parking areas for the right opportunity to strike. Opportunistic crime takes just seconds. The best way to protect yourself and your guests is to stay alert and put the right security measures in place,” says Hattingh.
Practical security tips for entertaining:
- Secure your home: Ensure all systems—especially outdoor beams, electric fencing, and CCTV—are fully functional and activated
- Keep gates closed: Avoid leaving gates open while waiting for guests. This creates an easy access point for intruders
- Carry a panic button: Keep it on your person at all times. A silent panic can save lives in an emergency
- Manage guest parking: Have guests park inside your property if possible. If they must park outside, a visible security presence can deter crime
- Install proper lighting: Exterior lighting, especially motion-sensor lights, is a simple yet effective crime deterrent
- Request extra patrols: Ask your security provider to conduct additional patrols in your area during your event. The visible presence of an armed response vehicle is highly effective.
“A security officer can monitor your event or premises, giving you added peace of mind,” Hattingh adds. “Fidelity security officers assigned to private homes or venues are directly linked to local armed response units via our control room and panic systems.”
Casual guarding is a smart way to ensure the safety of both guests and property during events. With an expert eye on your function, no one needs to worry about personal safety or the security of their vehicles.
“Security shouldn’t dampen your fun—it should enhance your peace of mind,” concludes Hattingh. “With the right systems, on-site guarding, and a few basic precautions, you can ensure your celebration is remembered for all the right reasons.”
