Since its launch in August 2023, Fidelity SecureFire, a division of the Fidelity Services Group, has been making significant strides in revolutionising fire response services in South Africa. The unique ‘own first responder’ model has proven to be a game-changer in the critical fire response space, especially at a time when most fire stations around the country are grappling with resource constraints.
In the few months since its inception, Fidelity SecureFire has been actively serving Johannesburg and Tshwane, with a dedicated team of a fire chief and 80 fully-trained firefighters on standby 24-7. The service has been instrumental in responding to a variety of fires, with a marked increase in incidents involving lithium-based technologies.
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group says “Since the launch of Fidelity SecureFire, the team has responded to a total of 142 fires. This includes 75 residential fires and 67 commercial fires.
The teams have responded to 71 structural fires, a fire involving the structural components of various types of residential, commercial or industrial buildings and this has emerged as the most common type of fire that the team has been responding to. The rise in incidents involving lithium-based technologies is a trend that the team has also noted and is crucial for tailoring their response strategies. These fires, often caused by electronic devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets, and electric vehicles, are becoming increasingly common, particularly with the ongoing load shedding schedule impacting appliances.
Bartmann says he is also concerned about the many veld fires, which is not being helped by the unprecedented heat wave in many parts of Gauteng. “There have been 103 veld fires and these if untreated can create problems for homeowners.”
As the holiday season approaches, consider the following fire safety tips before leaving your home:
- Turn off all holiday lights and decorations to prevent electrical fires.
- Choose flame-resistant decorations and position them away from potential heat sources.
- Test smoke detectors and replace batteries if needed.
- Exercise caution with candles, keeping them away from flammable materials and never leaving them unattended
- Unplug unnecessary appliances to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
- Request a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home while you’re away.
